• 2021-2022 In Person Learning Update

The District will open with full-day, in-person learning for all grades on August 19, 2021. We are following all required public health protocols in order to maintain safe learning environments for students and staff.

A new law about Independent Study in the 2021-22 school year—California AB 130—also authorizes us to provide Independent Study for a student whose health would be put at risk by in-person instruction, as determined by the parent or guardian. Independent Study is a voluntary option for students. The independent study program will meet all of the legal requirements for educational progress, grade-level standards, synchronous instruction, and student engagement.

Published on July 12th for school districts to process, this late-arriving legislation has created a very tight timeline for us to plan for and communicate options to parents and guardians. Parents choosing an Independent Study option have the right to request a pupil-parent-educator conference meeting before enrollment to review the academic program delivery, student support, enrollment process, specific academic expectations as well as the withdrawal process.

Along with many of our program support opportunities, each Independent Study program will offer:

    • For pupils in transitional kindergarten and grades 1 to 3, inclusive, a plan to provide opportunities for daily synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.
    • For pupils in grades 4 to 8, inclusive, a plan to provide opportunities for both daily live interaction and at least weekly synchronous instruction for all pupils throughout the school year.
    • A plan to transition pupils whose families wish to return to in-person instruction from independent study expeditiously, and, in no case, later than five instructional days.

Note: Space may not be available at the student’s original school or the student may not have their first choice classes.

Parents with a child with an individualized educational program (IEP) may request a time to meet with the IEP team to discuss if the Independent Study option is an appropriate placement.
