Superintendent Welcome

  • Dear Millbrae Elementary School Community,

It is with immense enthusiasm and gratitude that I step into my role as the newly appointed Superintendent, entrusted by the Millbrae Board of Trustees to lead this exceptional community. In speaking with MESD staff, I've been inspired by the evident pride that runs deep within the Millbrae community. It's especially remarkable to learn that so many of our devoted staff members have strong roots in Millbrae, showing their commitment to giving back to their hometown.

I believe in collaborating with parents, staff, and the community to ensure our schools are welcoming environments that feel like a second home for our students. Our shared goal is to provide a transformative education that equips students with the knowledge and skills for success. Together, let's foster an environment that encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for learning. We aim to empower our students to not only achieve their academic potential but also develop into compassionate, resilient, and responsible citizens.

As an educator for 25 years, I have served in various roles including Director of Human Resources, Elementary and Middle School Principal, Middle School Assistant Principal, and sixth grade teacher in both the Palo Alto Unified and Cupertino Union School Districts. I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Education from the University of California, Los Angeles and two Master’s Degrees in Education Administration and Interdisciplinary Education from Santa Clara University.

I've been a lifelong Peninsula resident, having grown up just next door in Burlingame. My husband is a middle school social studies teacher and we have two sons, Jack and Sean. Jack is a sophomore in college at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and Sean is a senior at Aragon High School.

My two sons are older now, yet I remember their elementary school days like it was yesterday. My favorite parenting quote has always been, “The days are long, the years are short.” While I wanted my boys to grow academically, one of the most important things for me as a mother was knowing that the teachers in their lives genuinely cared about them. Strong relationships are essential, and the learning will naturally come when the connection between students and teachers is present.

My maiden name is “Chinn” and our family’s motto has always been “Chinn Up.” In fact, all of us have this on our license plate frames. As an educational leader, my mantra is, “Keep your chin up & let’s move forward.”

I pride myself on being a transparent and clear communicator and want to partner with you to ensure your children thrive as students in the Millbrae Elementary School District.

    Sincerely,

    Lisa Hickey

    MESD Superintendent
