  • Child Nutrition Department Update

    April 27, 2022

Parents, Guardians and Students of the Millbrae Elementary School District,

The Child Nutrition Department recently purchased a new Point of Sale (POS) system for our cafeterias. This new system will assist us in increasing the level of service we provide, as well as generate accurate school meal counts. We are preparing to implement this new system in our district during the week of May 9, 2022.

For breakfast and lunch service, students may be asked to use their current ID number (if needed, this number can be found in ParentVue) or Student ID card. Students will continue to be allowed one breakfast and one lunch, free of charge, each school day.   Please note that serving lines may be slower for the first few of days with the new POS system, but as the students familiarize themselves with the system the lines should move much more quickly.

For the upcoming 2022-2023 school year, all meals served will be free of charge to all students in the district under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Universal Meals Program.   Additional information on meal service for the upcoming school year will be provided in future communications.

If you have any questions, please contact our Child Nutrition Department at 650-697-5693 ext. 028 and we will be glad to assist you.  We look forward to serving your students in our cafeterias!

    In good health,

    Rachel Gekas

    Director, Child Nutrition Services

  • Masks strongly recommended for students and staff beginning
March 14, 2022 in the Millbrae Elementary School District

While masking will now be optional, our district welcomes and strongly encourages staff and students to continue mask wearing while indoors on school campuses.

We are pleased that COVID-19 cases continue to fall in Millbrae Elementary schools and San Mateo County. However, there may be times when we will need to bring back effective mitigations if there is an increase in community, classroom, or school-wide transmission. MESD will continue to monitor COVID-19 rates in our schools.

The health and safety of our students, staff, and communities remains a top priority for our school district.  While masks will be strongly recommended, additional layers of mitigation remain in place including:

    • Vaccine and booster access at San Mateo County clinics
    • COVID-19 testing opportunities - pooled testing at each school site
    • Masks for students and staff, who want to continue masking
    • Physical distancing to the greatest extent possible
    • Increased air ventilation

As always, frequent handwashing and staying home when you are sick are strongly recommended.  We encourage that, if you have not already done so, enroll your child in pooled testing at your respective school site. Asymptomatic, positive students and staff will no longer be required to quarantine. Everyone must stay home if a persistent fever is present - fever must be gone for over 24 hours without fever-reducing medications. Pooled testing is important in assisting our district in tracking accurate numbers of COVID - it will not be used to require asymptomatic isolation or quarantine.

During the week before Spring Break each one of our students and staff members will receive a COVID test. We respectfully request that everyone take the test on Sunday, April 3, 2022. We further request that if any of our students or staff are COVID positive, and symptomatic, please remain at home. Asymptomatic, fever-free students and staff are eligible to return.

We understand there are different beliefs, opinions, reasons, and comfort levels around masking, yet it is important to be patient and respect the personal choices of others. Some families may have vulnerable household members or have younger siblings who are not yet eligible for vaccination. We will continue to foster a climate of empathy and equity.

Our students, staff and school community have been through a challenging – and in some ways traumatic – two years, yet our outlook is hopeful. We are grateful that brighter and healthier days are ahead of us.

    Gratefully,
    Debbie
