The
Fourth of July Barbeque
Written by, Anne Roche
The family barbeque that no
one but me wanted in the house
Was too hot and humid for
everyone, from the barking dog Cassie,
To the screaming baby, and
even the chattering adults.
Uncle Jim was grilling burgers,
And everyone was everywhere
doing something, but not me.
Taking my time with
everything, I stood
In the black cement
driveway and smelled the newly cut grass.
The thick July air filled
my lunged and rejoiced
As sweat dripped off my
forehead, I wiped it away
And saw the one thing I
hoped for; watermelon.
Eagerly, I ran to the porch
and grabbed a slice
From the yellow bowl. After
picking out the seeds I took a huge bite.
Juicy and crunchy, sweet
and red like a candied apple,
It carried the heat away. Later
that day, I licked the sweet sticky
Juicy
from my fingers. I
can’t wait until the next barbeque!
