Miller Unruh and Reading Recovery Programs
Our Miller Unruh reading teacher, Ms. Gamble, serves an average of 12 first
grade children per year. Mrs. Hass, also serves four students one-on-one. Both
teachers are trained in Reading Recovery. The program consists of guided reading,
independent reading, shared reading, interactive writing, journal writing, and
phonics within the context of reading. At any given time, six students are taught
one on one for 30 minutes a day and five to ten students are taught in a small
group for 45 minutes a day. Students' reading abilities are evaluated at least
once a week, using running record. When a student reaches grade level, he or
she graduates from the program and a new student enters the program. Approximately
31% of the first grade class receives special reading services.
