In early spring, the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT) and the Renzuli Scale are administered to all third grade students to identify children who qualify for participation in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Summer Program which is available to District GATE children in grades four throught incoming eight. (Millbrae is part of a seven-year old GATE consortium with the Burlingame and San Bruno Park School Districts which rotate hosting the location each year.) In addition to information derived from the OLSAT, Renzuli and SAT, teachers observe students throughourt the year for a cluster of traits typical of gifted children including creativity, leadership, high achievement, talent in visual/performing arts, superior higher-thinking skills and other traits of the gifted child. Student self-esteem is also continually assessed. Products and student portfolios are continually evaluated. On-going input from professionals and parents is also considered.
