Welcome to the Millbrae Special Education Department.

The purpose of this website is to provide an overview on what is special education, the process of qualifying for special education services and to answer your questions.  Special education has many complexities and regulations, so feel free to contact us by phone or email with additional questions.

Special education is a service to support general education when the child has a qualifying disability that interferes with accessing instruction.  A student qualifies for special education services through an assessment process and meeting the eligibility under one of the 13 federally defined disabilities along with evidence that the disability interferes with the student’s education.  A student cannot qualify to receive special education services until the school has implemented interventions within general education and have documented inadequate progress.    When a student qualifies for special education services an individualized education program (IEP) is developed to address the specific needs of the student. Services provided depend on the individual needs of the student related to the disability.   The goal of special education is to support the student in accessing general education and support the broad educational goal of preparation for adulthood.
