Dear Spring Valley Families,
Thank you all for a tremendously successful start to the new school year. As we settle in after the first couple of weeks, I have quite a few upcoming events, requests and reminders to share with you, so please be aware there are several attachments. I have attached several separate flyers, including one for our Fall Fiesta, a Big Five Safety Training, School Site Council, Drop Off and Pick up Procedures and Garden Committee. These will also be posted with the Principal’s Message on our School Website here. Hope to see you at the Fall Fiesta next Sunday!

Coming Sept 19-20: MEF On-Campus Annual Donation Days!
September 19-20, classes can win PRIZES for BLUE SHIRT SPIRIT (9/19) and for PARTICIPATION (through 9/20)!
Our community voted overwhelmingly in favor of supporting education in Millbrae, so let’s show them that we can MATCH Measure N!
MEF and PTA/O work together to ensure access to enrichment for every Millbrae student. Your support helps make sure our kids get the education they deserve.
Learn more and donate at MillbraeKids.org or on the MEF Blue Flyers coming home soon.
Volunteer Sign Ups
If you have not been cleared to volunteer, please get an Volunteer Clearance form in the office or on our outside bulletin board. Once you have completed the form, please turn it in at the school office so I may sign it and send it to the District Office. You will then be contacted for a finger printing appointment.
If you turn in your Volunteer Clearance forms by September 18th, you can be scheduled for the mobile lab that will be on hand at the District Office Thursday, September 20. Once you are cleared, your clearance is good as long as your child is registered in Millbrae School District. You must be cleared to volunteer in class, on field trips, etc.
Our PTA has many events and other opportunities for you to volunteer. I will be sharing a survey from them so that you can easily sign up. I have also attached information about the garden committee.
School Site Council
We currently have several openings for our School Site Council, which meets 6 times during the year. Please see the attached information sheet and application. If you are interested, please turn in the completed application by Friday, September 14th to the office. An election will take place by the end of the month. Our first meeting will take place in October. At that time, we will decide on the best meeting dates and times for the year.
Safety –Big Five
San Mateo County trains all schools and first responders on the Big Five Safety protocols. All students and staff are trained as well. A flyer for a community training is attached.
All teachers and staff have been working to implement Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. This system creates consistent expectations for students throughout the school. We have installed a banner in front with our new STAR Stallion Mottos:
Strive to do your best
Always work together
Respect yourself and others
More posters will begin appearing around the school soon, listing expectations to be safe, be respectful and be responsible. Information will continue to be shared as the year progresses.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Thank you for continue to support our new after school procedure. Our school valets will be back beginning this week, so I have attached a reminder sheet regarding both morning drop off and after noon pick up.
Safe Routes to School: Spring Valley will participate in a pilot program through The San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE) for the San Mateo County Safe Routes to School for Health and Wellness (SR-FHW) project. The project will address three critical areas of long-term Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program sustainability:
- Embedding in-class bicycle and pedestrian safety education in targeted grades aligned to existing education standards
- The development of school culture that supports safe and healthy school travel, free from the negative effects of bullying
- The empowerment of parents and community members to embrace active forms of transportation.
More information will be out soon as we implement the program.
